For the first time, the Foot Locker Cross Country Northeast Regional will be held someplace other than historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, meet director Phil Zodda announced yesterday. The qualifier for the Foot Locker National will still take place on Nov. 28 but instead will be held at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park, the site of last year’s New York State Public Schools Championships.
The coming cross season looks like a repeat of last year with LaSalle Academy of Providence battling Barrington High School for the state title.
LaSalle won the title for the past two years, but Barrington has arguably its strongest team in school history and a burning desire to win its first state championship since 1994.
Team depth will probably be the determining factor.
LaSalle lost its #1 runner, Jean Christensen, now at Boston College, and #5 runner, Caroline Capuano to graduation.
But the Catholic school in Providence returns its #2 and #3 three runners _ sophomores Emily Papazian, who finished 8th in the state meet with a time of 19:36 and Molly Keating, 12th, in 19:49. They will also rely on Victoria Beardwood, a senior, who ran a 20:12 and finished 21st in the state meet.
All three girls had strong seasons on the track _ indoor and outdoor.
The other spots on the LaSalle varsity will be up for grabs among Danielle Renzi, a junior, Siobhan Kelly, a sophomore, and senior Colleen McKenna. It's too early to tell if any of the team's freshmen can crack the Top 7 which has been one of the top teams in the state for the past five years.
The Barrington girls have never looked stronger. They have a veteran team with three seniors and three juniors leading the way. Returning from last year's squad that was ranked #1 for most of the season are Senior Emily Siskind, 3rd in the state championship with a time of 18:44, Sarah Barry, 10th, in 19:44; and junior, Molly Malinowski, 11th, in 19:49. Also back is junior Alexandra August, who was 20th in the state meet with a time of 20:11.
Siskind, Barry and Malinowski all had stellar seasons in outdoor track, while Barry was the New England Champion in the 1000 _ 2:53 _ at Reggie Lewis Arena in Boston.
What makes the Barrington girls especially dangerous is the return of Abigail Jones, a junior, who was finished 3rd in the state championship as a freshman. She missed most of her sophomore cross country due to illness, but she has returned and joined her teammates for a strong summer of running that included an arduous week at the Gold Medal XC Camp at Dartmouth College.
This summer also marked the first real preseason training for Siskind and Barry who were soccer players their first two years of high school.
Another big addition to the mix in Barrington is Emily Caesar, a senior, who decided to forego soccer and join the XC team. Caesar is a talented 400 and 800 runner on the track who has clocked times of 61 seconds and 2:22. She is a key addition to this talented squad and the addition of Jones and Caesar could make Barrington a contender for the New England XC Championship title.
Last year, at Derryfield Park in Manchester, N.H,, they finished 8th.
The battle for the individual state title promises to be a good one. Siskind, Barry, Malinowski and Jones, all of Barrington are contenders, as well as Papazian and Keating. Also in the hunt will be Junior Samantha Chace, of Toll Gate in Warwick, who finished 7th in last year's state meet with a time of 19:26. She excelled in indoor and outdoor track, proving to be one of the top 1500, 1000, 800 runners in New England.
Others looking to win the title are Stephanie Beaudette, a senior at St. Mary's Bay-View Academy, who was an all-stater as a freshman and sophomore. She suffered an injury in mid-season last fall and missed the class and state championships. Others vying for the title will be Cranston West seniors, Arianna Colella and Alyssa DeQuattro. Colella, a strong performer for the past three years in XC and track, was 6th in last year's state XC meet with a time of 19:07. DeQuattro, a standout as a freshman, has suffered from injuries the past two years, but she had a solid season in outdoor track last spring. Look for both of them to try to finish their high school careers with a bang.

Surpassing the three individual state titles (3,000-, 1,500- and 1,000-meter runs) he earned during the indoor season would be a feat in itself. Westerly senior Andrew Springer did just that at Saturday’s Rhode Island Outdoor Track and Field Championships and also received an added bonus.
Andrew Springer of Westerly, R.I., smashed the state record in the 3,000-meter run and also ran the country’s fastest for the distance with a spectacular winning time of 8 minutes, 23.3 seconds at the annual Bishop Hendricken Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The girls outdoor track teams from LaSalle Academy, South Kingstown and Smithfield rolled to commanding victories on Saturday to grab their respective class championships.
First state performance lists for 2009 outdoor track and field season
Mike Read, a junior at Barrington High School, ran a 10.5 in the 100 meter dash on Saturday at the Classical Classic in Providence.

Add Upper Dublin to the list of consecutive PA DMR winners behind Coatesville and Germantown Friends. Robert Micikas surprises fellow Pennsylvanian and FL champ to take 3K. Tatnell, DE wins state's first ever Penn Relays Championship of America with DMR win on Thursday night. Girls 3000m is very fast as 3 girls run under 9:36. Six girls teams break 46 secons in 4x100 COA, Roosevelt 2nd in 45.24.

SUNDAY: Robbie Andrews and Conor McCollough both shatter US record. Purvis and Rankin win the 60m dashes, Wilson and Crawford win the HH. SATURDAY: Nick Vena (Morristown, NJ) tosses shot put 70-05, which is a National Soph. record, NJ states record, and Armory record. FRIDAY: Solomon Haile(Sherwood, MD) wins in a new national record time of 14:22.88. Fordham Prep breaks national record in the shuttle hurdle relay with their 29.15 winning time. Sheepshead Bay is 2nd in 29.18, the 2nd fastest time ever. Swensen Tech girls win in 33.40.
Three huge performances were recorded this evening at the New England Championships in Boston as Andrew Springer (Westerly RI) ran a US #1 2 mile of 9:02.58, which would convert under 9 minutes for 3200 meters. Meanwhile, Cas Loxsom (Wilbur Cross CT) dropped two seconds from his previous best in the 600 to clock a US #2 1:18.72 600. The Newton South girls were unable to win a Massachusetts state title last week in the 4x800, but now are the fastest time in the country and US #7 all-time in their 9:04.13 victory. More to come from the Reggie Lewis Center including a full meet summary and videos.

The New England Indoor Championships will be held on Friday, March 6th at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The meet will gather top athletes and relays from Massachussetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
The 2 mile races will feature two of the nation's best in Andrew Springer of Rhode Island and Emily Jones of Massachusetts. Jones ran a US #1 10:29 2 mile last weekend at the Massachussetts State Meet, while Springer has been the US leader in the 3K since early season at 8:27.
Daundre Barnaby dominated the Connecticut State Meet a few weeks ago winning several events and will attempt to do the same at the regional level as the Weaver High School senior is the top seed in the 600 (1:20.29) and 300 (34.10) meter dashes and likely will be featured on the top seeded 4x400. It was another pair of titles for Bishop Hendricken and La Salle Academy in the respective boys’ and girls’ competition at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Indoor Track and Field Championships, but it was Andrew Springer that stole the show.
The nationally-ranked Westerly High senior capped off his final season on the indoor surface Sunday afternoon with three individual crowns, including record-breaking performances in the 3,000- and 1,500-meter runs and a near mark in the 1,000. For good measure, Springer also uncorked a sub-two minute effort for the Bulldogs’ second-place 4x800 squad. Read more...

PORTLAND, Ore. – Normally we see a stoic Fayetteville-Manilus squad unfazed by success, already on to the next challenge. Not this time. This time they made room for tears and hugs. And more tears. It’s not that none of the other races mattered. It’s that each race was another step climbed; another step toward its third-straight national championship. It was another step toward an ever-evolving stage of excellence.
If cold weather bothers Solomon Haile, it didn't appear to affect him yesterday in New York City and should bode well for his chances in San Diego.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - New England's smallest and flattest state produced some big time performances on the punishing hills of Derryfield Park on Saturday at the New England Cross Championships.
The first three finishers in the boy's 5-kilometer race were Rhode Islanders. Mark Feigen, an East Greenwich senior, nipped Westerly's Andrew Springer, also a senior, to capture the coveted New England crown. Feigen posted a time of 15:47.1, less than second ahead of Springer. In third place was junior Nick Ross, also of East Greenwich, who crossed the finish line in 15:50.
Another Rhode Islander, Connor Mercurio, of LaSalle Academy, was 6th, in 15:56.
The top three boys teams from Rhode Island were Bishop Hendricken, 9th with 294 points, last weekend's State Champions; Chariho, 11th, 367 points; and Barrington, 13th, 387 points.
Elly Teitsworth (shown below) from Williams won the ladies 2008 ECAC DIV III championship today in a time of 23:33. Williams finished all seven runners in the top ten and easily won the women's team competition.

In the men's race Adam Smith (picture shown below)from Saint Vincents (PA) took the lead around the four mile mark and went on to win convincingly in a time of 26:18 to finish seven seconds ahead of Nick Pampena who finished one second ahead of Anthony Lucero of Vassar. Williams once again were victorious in the men's team competition with a total of 64 points. Keene State were 2nd with 100 points.

Rhode Island 800M champion, Mark Feigan of East Greenwich high school proved today that he is very capable of running cross country too. Feigan’s 800M speed proved very useful at the finish of today’s race where Rhode Island runners dominated today’s New England boys high school championship race like never before. In a reversal of last weeks Rhode Island state championship where Westerly’s Andrew Springer set a course record, Feigan switched positions with Springer. Nick Ross also from the small school of East Greenwich bounced back to form from last week’s state championship to take a solid 3rd place today. Ross will be back next year to keep the Rhode Island streak going as he is a junior. In addition Conner Mercurio of La Salle took 6th place in 15:56.6
